Greys class 11th February

Date: 10th Feb 2022 @ 3:37pm

This week we have continued our work about Little Red Riding Hood. We began the week by drawing pictures of the wolf and thinking of adjectives to describe him. We then used those descriptions the following day to create our own Wanted Posters for the wolf. On Thursday we sequenced the story using either printed pictures, that we had to put in order or draw our own and then wrote sentences to describe each stage of the story.

On Wednesday we had a real treat as Mr Steele spent our RE day with us. It was lots of fun listening to a variety of stories from different religions and then completing the activities to go alongside them.

In Maths we have begun our measuring unit and whilst the Year 1s have been using non standard units, such as cubes to measure different objects the Year 2s have been carefully measuring in centimetres using a ruler, which has proved far trickier than it looks.

In Art we looked at our Learning Challenge question, “How can we turn that photograph into a painting?”

We began by looking at artwork by the artist Julian Opie who uses bold ‘flat’ colours to create quite abstract portraits.

We wanted to try and emulate his style. So first, using photos of ourselves we made pencil sketch portraits taking notice of our features, eg; where our hairline was and the shapes of our eyes. We then used a marker pen to trace those features onto a transparent plastic sheet . The aim was to look at shapes and make fewer but bolder lines. At this stage we wanted the image to remain quite plain so we left out features such as eyelashes and teeth. Next we used a limited colour range of acrylic paint to fill in our facial shapes taking care not to paint over the lines we had drawn. Mrs Clinkard was very impressed at the level of concentration in the room that produced such amazing carefully executed works of art.

Mrs Hawkins was equally impressed with Mrs Clinkard for teaching such an amazing lesson, and inspiring the children to produce such amazing work!

Mrs Clinkard was very excited when she discovered that she would be teaching Computing on Tuesday and it was as if the lesson had been tailor made for her as it involved an element of art and design. The children had to create their own BeeBot world design for the beebots to navigate their way around and once again there were some fabulous and very creative designs.

Please remember that we have our rearranged trip from November to Science Oxford for next Tuesday 15th February. If you have not already returned your consent form please do so and the children will need a packed lunch and water bottle.

A very big thank you must go to all the adults who have helped out over the last two weeks in my absence and a special thank you to the children who have coped remarkably well with the changes. Whilst I have been able to plan the activities for the children each day I have certainly missed teaching them and seeing their smiling faces every day and can’t wait to be back in the classroom.

Many thanks to our book reviewers this week. Next week’s book reviews go to Barney, Ely and Ezra. You will find templates in the homework section on School spider or please feel free to create your own.
