Greys class 21st May

Date: 21st May 2021 @ 3:29pm

Hello and welcome to another week in Greys class.

This week we reached the end of our topic whereby we have been learning about significant individuals and before doing so we learned about people with disabilities and how they have persevered to overcome them. On Tuesday we shared our homework where we had chosen an individual who we felt had made a difference to the world and created a poster about them, before presenting it to our classmates, explaining why we had chosen them and what they had done to make the world a better place. We chose people like Alan Turing, David Attenborough, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill and Rosa Parks to name but a few. There were some amazing presentations and well done to all the children for being so confident in their delivery and explanations. The children were so excited when it was there turn to present and loved listening to their classmates and finding out who they had chosen.

Next week we will begin our new topic, “What would Percy the Park Keeper have found on our Common?” in which we will be finding out all about plants, trees and birds. We have a trip to Sutton Courtenay Education centre booked for June 9th on Fascinating flowers and intriguing trees, so if you could complete and return your forms as soon as possible it would be appreciated. If you have any questions about the trip please do get in touch.

In Maths the Year 1s have been working on finding halves and quarter of shapes and amounts, which is quite a tricky concept, so if you wish to practise this further at home that would be wonderful. The Year 2s have finished their topic on movement and direction and have learned which way is left and right and clockwise and anticlockwise, but again regular reminders of this at home would be good. They have spent the rest of the week revising the last few topics in Maths and having a big focus on timestables and a huge thank you must go to those regularly practising at home, it will make all the difference going forward into Key stage 2.

In Literacy we finished our Zahra topic and in Big Write on Wednesday wrote our own versions of Zahra, some of us did a recount of the original story, whilst others, changed the main character, gave her a friend, changed the setting or created a different problem to the one in the story. The children absolutely love Big Write and it’s a pleasure to see them so excited and using their imagination and putting the things that we have been working on over the last couple of weeks into their writing. After so much writing over the last few weeks we listened to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and in groups reenacted the tale to our classmates, it was a lot of fun and we certainly have some budding actors in our midst, so much so that I am already looking forward to the Christmas play.

In PSHE we talked about the changes we experience as we get older and in Art we listened to a piece of music entitled The Storm by Benjamin Britten and as we listened we closed our eyes and let the music paint pictures in our heads. We then drew those pictures and thought about mixing colours that we might see in a seascape. We created some lovely paintings, which are now on display for us all to see.
