Greys 12th May

Date: 11th May 2023 @ 1:29pm

This week in maths, the year 1s have been continuing their learning of numbers within 50. We have revisited part-whole models and have looked at partitioning two-digit numbers into tens and ones. We have also explored the numerous ways we can represent a number. See the picture for how many different ways we could think of respresenting the number 41. On Friday, we began exploring number lines to 50.

The year 2s have been continuing their multiplication and division unit. They have explored: multiplying and dividing by 2; multiplying and dividing by 10 and multiplying and dividing by 5. Next week, we will be moving onto fractions!

In English, we have been doing some grammar work linked to our work on the Three Little Pigs. We have looked at the use of time conjunctions to link ideas together. We sequenced images of the story and then used time conjunctions (First, now, then, next, after that, finally) to retell the story in words. We have also revisited conjunctions (y2 - subordinating conjunctions) and how they can be used to link two main clauses together.

The year 1s have been very excited this week with their handwriting as we have finally completed all the letter joins for the alphabet. As a result, we're moving onto capital letters and the children have now been given their very own handwriting book in preparation for year 2.

In phonics, as we begin to look towards the phonics screening, we have been recapping some of the new sounds we've learned this year. This week we've recapped 'ir' in bird, 'ou' in cloud, 'ea' in head and 'oy' in boy. The children have been challenged with writing sentences including these words, focusing on their use of capital letters, full stops and lead ins for their handwriting.

In Science, we have been investigating hygiene, particularly germs and how they travel from person to person. We used glitter to represent 'germs' on our hands and how far these germs can travel when we shake hands with different people. We were all amazed how easily they were transferred, we were all finding glitter everywhere!

In cricket on Thursday, the children were able to practice their over arm throwing at a a set distance to their partner. They practised their stance like starfish and launching over their heads.
