Greys 21st April

Date: 21st Apr 2023 @ 4:10pm

We've kicked off the first week of term hitting the ground running!

In Maths, the year 1s have begun their learning of place value with numbers up to 50. It would be great if you could support this at home, by practising counting backwards and forwards within 50 from different starting points. It would also be beneficial if the children were familiar with writing these numbers and recognising what they should look like - this could be in many real life situations: looking at pence in the shop; petrol prices; counting house numbers etc. The year 2s have finally begun their multiplication and division unit. We have looked at equal and unequal groupings and how adding equal groupings is another way of repeated addition (next week we will look at how repeated addition is the same as multiplying.)

In spellings, the year 2s have been looking at the suffix '-ment' at the ends of words whilst the year 1s have been familiarising themselves with alien words and recapping previously learned sounds ahead of the phonics screening check in June.

In English, we are focusing on traditional tales, namely The Three Little Pigs. We have explored the necessary features required in traditional tales; discussed new vocabularly included in our model text; created a 'wanted poster' (a character description for the Big Bad Wolf; and today have begun drawing story maps telling the whole story. This will help us next week to internalise the story and eventually write it all out in our own words.

In Geography, we havee been looking at the UK, and the key differences between towns and countryside using the story of the 'Country Mouse and the Town Mouse' to support our understanding. This will eventually conclude our geography unit of work from last term all about 'Where does our food come from?' We will eventually be looking at where different foods come from within the UK and foods that have to be grown seasonally.

In Science, we are exploring hygiene. Today we began a science investigation looking into how far germs spread when we sneeze. A lot of the children had predicted that they thought it would be safer to be further away from a person who sneezes but we quickly observed today (with a trusty spray bottle filled with water and food colouring) that actually, the furher away you are, the further the water particles carrying germs can spread.

In Computing, our unit is all about Stop Motion. We began looking at flip books: what they are; and how they are used to create animations. Next week the children we have a go at making their very own flipbooks.

In Art, we are learning all about birds. On Thursday afternoon we had a lovely art lesson with the door open, the sun shining in and the birds tweeting away outside. We have been practising the skill of observational drawings. Mrs White let us watch some videos of wild birds then paused the video and modelled how to draw not what we think we see, but what we can actually see in the picture. The children worked so beautifully silent as they were all deep in concentration, checking their drawing and looking back at the TV image of a bird in the tree. They should all be very proud of themselves.

Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs W.
