Greys class 10th September

Date: 10th Sep 2021 @ 1:34pm

Welcome back to a new school year! I hope you all had a wonderful Summer break and thank you so much to those of you who attended the Parent information meeting on Monday. I have uploaded the powerpoint that I used in the meeting onto the class page on the school website. If you have any further questions regarding the meeting or the powerpoint please do not hesitate to get in touch. I have also updated the class page on the school website which details general information regarding Greys class.

The children have been absoultely amazing this week and have settled back into school with great ease. It has been loively to see them coming in msiling and playing and working happily with their friends.

We have spent this week getting to know each other as a class and have been doing some great Maths. We have practised counting forwards and backwards to 100 and have been looking at tens and ones, using ten frames and part, part, whole models.

In Literacy we have been reading Naughty Bus by Jan & Jerry Oke. We discussed what we already knew about buses and then discovered lots more facts. We made a set of class rules and wrote a letter to Naughty Bus explaining what  the class rules were and why he should follow them. We also identified the different ‘ai’ sounds in the story and used them to write our own sentences about Naughty Bus. On Friday we renacted the story using expression in our voices and thought of adjectives to describe the feelings of the characters in the story.

In our Geography lesson we have been looking at maps and understanding why we need street names, we used a key to locate different points of interest on a map and then created our own kep to locate points of interest in Peppard. We also wrote our own addresses and postcodes. If you do have time to regularly check with your child to ensure that they know their address that would be a great help.

In Computing we have been discussing what it means to stay safe online.

We had our first French lesson of the year with Madame Sauvage which was lots of fun and read a story called Badjelly the Witch by Spike Milligan which we found very funny! We also read Claude in the cIty and are now reading The Twits by Roald Dahl.

It was a joy to see the pure look of delight when we presented the children with their reading buddies this week! I only hope they do the trick and inspire them to read every day. Thank you so much to those of you who have already sent me photos of your children reading with their buddy at home, they will be put on display in our reading area in the classroom.

Homework

Reading

Mrs Clinkard and myself have listened to all the children read individually and they now have a reading book and reading record, which will need updating daily as they read. As I explained in the meeting we will no longer be using GoRead! and will be reverting back to the reading records that we used pre Covid. They also have their very own reading buddy( cuddly toy) which will hopefully inspire them to want to read daily. Please ensure that their book and reading records are in class daily.

Maths

Year 2 - timestables. The children have come home with a book detailing the timestable they are on. All children will begin on x2 and will need to have instant recall of x2 in random order before progressing onto dividing by 2. They will then have a mixed assessment of multiply and divide by 2 before moving onto x10. We will update their book accordingly and the challenges on Sumdog will reflect the level they are working at. We will assess them throughout the week in class, but there will be no formal weekly test in class.. You can obviously use any other resources you wish to supplement the learning of timestables. Should you require a reminder of your child’s Sumdog login please get in touch with the office.

Year 1 - Sumdog is in the process of being set up for you, so from next week I will set a weekly challenge for you. In the meantime you may wish to practise counting forwards and backwards to and from any given number to 20 and then progress to 50.

Book reviews

These are completed on a rota basis.

Book reviews for this week go to Freya, Immie and Francesca. Each child needs to choose a book and explain to their classmates why they chose the book, what they enjoyed most about it and a brief description as to what the book is about. Templates can be found in the homework section of school spider or you may create your own.

Well done on the first week back and have a lovely weekend!
