Greys class 14th May

Date: 14th May 2021 @ 2:00pm

Yet another busy week in Greys class has flown by.

This week in Maths the year 2s have been working on position and direction and it has proved rather tricky remembering left and right, clockwise and anticlockwise, quarter, half and three quarter turns, so please continue to practise this at home. The Year 1s have been having fun working on wholes and halves of shapes and amounts and are now experts at cutting things in half to ensure that there are equal shares. Next week we will be moving onto quarters of shapes and amounts.

In Literacy we continued with Zahra and wrote expanded noun phrases to describe her personality, before writing some amazing character descriptions. We then went on to using conjunctions to join two sentences and finished the week writing sentences, which included action verbs.

In History we were amazed at some of the fascinating facts that we found out about women’s rights and heard all about the suffragists and suffragettes. Then we finished the week discussing children’s rights and thinking of what we would change in the world and explained why.

We continued with our animation topic in Computing and worked on the ipads this week on an app called Stop Motion. We used a space background and took 11 photos of a space ship moving across it to create a moving animation, Next week we will each be planning an animation to create a story, which we will film in the final week of term. We are having so much fun with this topic and are all becoming quite accomplished animators.

In Art we looked at some paintings by Pablo Picasso. In particular we focused on the way he used colour to show emotion. We found out that at different times in his life he chose to paint only in certain ways. In some paintings he used shades of blue to show sadness, and then later started using shades of red to suggest a lighter mood. We then explored the effect of adding white or black paint to two colours, blue and red. By careful mixing we created many different shades of the same colour.

Homework

Book review - We began this before Christmas and I would like to start it back up again to hopefully inspire some reading for pleasure at home. It will be done on a rota basis and I will select 3 children a week, who have not yet done one to present to the class. They just need to choose a book, give a brief summary of what it's about and explain whether they liked it or not and why. This can be emailed to the office and Mrs Hilton will forward this to me. If these can be sent in by each Monday it would be appreciated. I have uploaded some templates to the homework section on school spider shoudl you wish to use them. This week's children will be Phoebe, Josh and Esther.

History - Next week will be the final week of our current History topic and I would like each of the children to think of someone who has had an impact on the world and made a difference in some way to the lives we lead today. A few of the people that we have studied this term have been Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Greta Thunberg, Emmeline Pankhurst and Emily Davison. This can be in the form of a drawn or painted picture, photograph or they could even create a poster, which will need to be uploaded to the homework section as we did in Lockdown. I have put a page up there ready for you to upload. We can then display this on the screen in class and each child will need to explain why they have chosen this person and know how that individual made a difference. If you could upload this ready for our lesson on Tuesday 18th it would be appreciated.

Reading – I have spoken with all the children this week about the importance of updating GoRead! and would be extremely grateful if each time the children read that GoRead! is updated. If you are unable to access GoRead! please let me know
