Greys Class 14th Oct

Date: 17th Oct 2022 @ 7:50am

This term is absolutely flying by.

Over the last two weeks we've had so much exciting new learning.

In y1 maths, the children have been continuing to explore counting - finding 1 more, 1 less, counting backwards and spotting the missing numbers in sequences. They have begun using the terminology 'same', 'less' and 'more' to compare two numbers. Next week, we will be using the symbols <, > and = to represent this.

In y2 maths, they have been persevering with flexibly partitioning numbers to 100. Rather than partitioning the number 72 into 70 and 2, there are many other ways it can be split - the children used dienes to explore this before moving on to using part-whole models to show the pictorial format and then finally using number sentences to show the abstract.

In phonics, we have moved onto learning the new year 1 phase 5 sounds. Last week we looked at /ay/ in play, /ou/ in cloud, /oy/ in jou and /ea/ in each. We will continue to revisit these sounds this week, especially /ea/ in each as most have found this tricky!

In handwriting, the year 1s are focusing on a new letter each week, relearning the formation of the letter with a 'lead in' and 'lead out'. Some of the year 2s are building up their stamina to begin joining letters together.

In music, the children have been exploring timbre linked to different fairytales.

In PHSE, we have been continuing our learning of dangers - stranger danger including strangers who can be considered 'safe strangers'. The week was concluded by a visit from our local PCSO - Graham. He came and spoke to the children about his role as a community support officer and how this differs to other police officers. He also brought along his van and allowed the children to have a good old look inside!

Last week, we also had our DT and RE day.

For DT day, we were set out brief by Mr Mouse - who wanted a newly designed windmill that needed to feature a structure, an axle and a turbine. All the children decorated their nets before beginning to construct them. They were all an absolute success - each child listened carefully to instructions and were able to make a free-standing windmill which with a good puff - spun around. Please enjoy the mass of photos below to showcase our making process.

For RE day, our focus was all about leadership. Who should you follow?
We began the morning thinking about leaders in our life: Mr Steele; the house captains; King Charles III; our prime minister; the reverend; and both the women's and men's football managers. From this, we discussed the role of each of these leaders; their impact; and what life would be like if they weren't there. The children wrote questions for Mr Steele, who came to visit the classroom for a Q&A session were he was asked about his role as head teacher.

Have a lovely week,

Mrs W.
