Greys Class 16th Sept

Date: 16th Sep 2022 @ 2:50pm

What a great couple of weeks we've had settling into life in years 1 and 2.

In maths - we have been using lots of concrete resources: diennes, ten frames, place value counters, bead strings and unifix. The year ones have been using the equipment to practise sorting and counting objects in different ways: by colour; shape; size; or objects. They have also been using their new maths book to practise their number formations up to 10. The year twos have been rehearsing counting up to 20 and representing the numbers in different ways using all of our maths equipment. Today, we looked at how we can use groups of ten to more quickly count up to larger numbers.

In English, we are looking at the story 'Wild' by Emily Hughes. We have been using our retrieval and inference skills to make deductions about the book and the main character. Next week we will be creating character descriptions.

In phonics, the year ones have been recapping phase 2 sounds this week - remembering all of their learning from Reception whilst Mrs W completed the rest of the phonics assessments. In spellings, the year twos have been recapping the /n/ sound spelt 'gn' or 'kn'.

In Topic, we're continuing to look at our local area - we have been using terms such as 'often' and 'rarely' to describe places we might go to. We've also used 'near' and 'far' to describe the location of major cities around the UK.

In art, we've been using our bodys to create spirals. We've used our body to create different sized spirals and have experimented with a range of drawing tools: chalks, pastels, colouring pencils, felt tips etc. On Tuesday, we made snail art (which will be available to see on the boards in the playground).

In music, our theme is fairytales. We added sound effects to the story of Little Red Riding Hood to represent sounds that would occur at different parts in the story.

As you may have heard, we have a fabulous new tree in our reading corner and it looks so much more welcoming corner for children to curl up, relax and enjoy a story. (Mrs White had far too much fun creating it!)

Thank you to the parents who joined me on Wednesday for the 'Welcome to Greys'.
For those of you who couldn't make it, the slides will be available to download on the class page.

Have a great weekend, Mrs W.
