Greys Class 21st Oct

Date: 17th Oct 2022 @ 1:44pm

What a lovely end to the half term break - y2s donut sale on the Playground was a complete success! Thank you to Lara's mummy Claire and everyone else involved in the setting up. Hopefully all of the funds raised can be put to great use! I know Greys children already have a wishlist for new wet play equipment for our classroom.

In maths, the y1s have been getting used to using the symbols > < and = to compare two numbers. Meanwhile, the y2s have been getting to grips with reading and labelling number lines. At first, we were counting up in 10s before moving on to counting on in 1s.

In English, we have been retelling the story of Wild. We first sequenced a story map by putting the images in the order they occured in the book. We then had to write a sentence to describe what was happening in each stage of the story before finally retelling the entire story in our own words.

In phonics, the y1s have been recapping their new phase 5 sounds in addition to all the other phase 3 and 4 sounds from the term - there has been so much learning involved and Mrs W is very pleased with the efforts of all! For spellings, the year 2s have been creating mneumonics for the common exception words (words that don't fit a spelling rule). Mrs Fowler has also introduced them to dictionaries and how to use them.

In PSHE, we have been learning about keeping safe including our private areas and the underwear rule. We watched Pantosaurus - a great resource provided by the NSPCC encouraging children to keep themselves safe.

In geography, we have been honing our maps skills further by learning to actually read a live map. Mrs White gave the children a map of the playground with letters mark on the map. The children were given certain letters they had to find and write down the magic road name that matched the letter.

We had another visitor to the infants on Thursday morning - yes, a PCSO officer called Sue who came to share a new book explaining all about the role of police offer called PC Ben. The children watched a video of the story being read to them by the author before being given a chance to ask further questions. Sue really wanted to stress that the main role of a PCSO is to help others.

One of the biggest challenges we have in KS1 is relearning the alphabet with lead ins and lead outs - ready for joining in year 2! There are some great books available to support your child at home. Please see Greys class page for links to recommended buys.

I hope everyone has a lovely break - I'll see you on Tuesday 1st November!
