Greys class 25th September 2020

Date: 25th Sep 2020 @ 3:48pm

What another busy week we have had in Greys class!

We were all very excited to see the photos of Mrs Hawkins’ new puppy who we all thought looked a bit like Paddington. Speaking of Paddington we have continued with our Paddington theme and this week planned and wrote our own adventures involving Paddington. We really enjoyed thinking of trouble and problems that he created. The Year 2s were very excited because this was our first Big Write of the year. For those of you new to Greys class we have Big Write every 2 weeks and it is usually at the end of a unit of Literacy work, whereby the children have a totally independent piece of writing to complete. Today was our Paddington story, but sometimes it might be a non fiction piece, instructions, letters or even a poem. We have quiet background music playing and the children write in peace. Once I have marked the work I choose a Big Write champion from each year group and we share their work and explain why they  have received the award. I look forward to reading their stories over the weekend.

We also began to write our information booklets abut Henley. We created a front cover and then chose three places that we thought Paddington would like to go to, drew a picture of them and then wrote about them. Lots of us chose Mill Meadows and quite a few chose Bagatelle and various coffee shops. We can’t wait to see the finished booklets next week.

Mrs Hawkins showed us how GoRead!, the new digital reading record system works and we are looking forward to reading and updating our records. We particularly liked designing our own avatars.

All the details have been sent home today and should you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch. It is so important that the children read every day with an adult and hopefully this will improve the communication between home and school regarding this. We do endeavor to read with every child on a one to one basis at least once a week and have daily shared reading lessons every morning along with our class read.

In Maths we have been comparing objects and amounts using the greater than, less than and equals to symbols.

In our shared reading lessons we have been reading The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse and spent a lot of time comparing the town and the country. Many of us decided that like Pipin we too would prefer to live in the country rather than the town.

We finished our class read of Hotel Flamingo by Alex Milway and the children have thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story of Anna and her team restoring Hotel Flamingo. In fact many of the children were interested in reading the sequel, which is called Fabulous Feast. So, should you wish to buy a copy it is available on Amazon or both Henley and Sonning Common libraries are now open should you prefer to borrow a copy.

Year 2 homework

Year 2 will have weekly homework of daily reading, spellings and timestables. Once a month I will also set a topic related homework, which is to be uploaded to their scrapbook on School spider.

Sumdog login details have been sent home and I have set timestables homework for them on there which they can access. They will begin with x10.

I have also set them some weekly spellings, which I am trialling to see how that goes, so if they could also learn those that would be great too and I would welcome any feedback on this way of doing spellings. Along with playing the games they can also write them down to help them to learn them as they did last year.

The Topic homework is for them to choose a person who lives in Henley or the surrounding areas and ask them some questions about their job. As we are currently learning about Henley, it is useful for the children to know the types of jobs that people in the area do. We can then compare our answers and will hopefully have a good variety to share. I would like this to be uploaded to their scrapbooks on Spider by Tuesday morning if possible please. I have posted the sheet onto Spider in the homework section as we did during Lockdown for them to complete. If you have any problems accessing this then please let me know.

Year 1 homework

Year 1 will have weekly homework of daily reading and spellings. I will email your Sumdog logins to practice your spellings, as with Year 2 you can choose to play the games and write them down should you wish.  This will begin next Friday for you. Once a month I will also set a topic related homework, which can be uploaded to their scrapbooks on School spider.

Next week it is Henley Literary Festival and Greys class will be participating in several events throughout the week. Please log onto the website to look at the children’s events as I know that Ben Fogle is talking about Mr Dog and a deer friend at 11am on Sunday, which I’m sure quite a few of the children will enjoy. The beauty of this year’s festival is that it is all free!

As the weather is beginning to get colder and wetter could I remind you that the children will need a coat in school every day.

Have a wonderful weekend.
