Greys class 26th March

Date: 25th Mar 2021 @ 5:34pm

This week has been a busy week in Greys class.

We began our new topic “What was it like when the Queen came to the throne?”

We watched the Coronation of Her Majesty and then reenacted it ourselves in a much more diluted version. We learned that she wore three crowns on the day and we also learned about the Crown Jewels. We then went on to find out more about the royal family and about the Queen herself.

In Literacy we wrote a list of questions that we would like to ask the Queen and we looked at her role and made a list of rules if we were King or Queen for the day, of which there were some very interesting ones!

We also read The Queen’s Knickers by Nicholas Allen and designed our own pair of knickers fit for a Queen and used adjectives to describe them, which was a lot of fun. They are now proudly on display in the classroom.

In Maths the Year 2s have been working on finding halves and quarters of shapes and amounts whilst the Year 1s have been recapping on their number bonds, 1 more and 1 less than a number, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and ordering numbers.

We read Katie In London by James Mayhew and looked at and found out about the different famous landmarks in London. We were fascinated by the Tower of London and the Globe Theatre and got very excited when we saw what the Princess Diana memorial park had to offer. We particularly enjoyed looking at some of the big toys in Harrods and Hamleys, although we did think they were rather expensive.

We have also had some assessments this week, in which the children approached in such a positive and enthusiastic manner.

We made Easter cards on Tuesday and finished threading the beads for our elephant mobiles which have brightened the classroom.

In Computing this term we have been learning about what is a computer. This week we got to invent our own form of computer, there are undoubtedly some very creative children in Greys class as we had inventions ranging from a glitter machine, to a robot that made someone’s little sister be quiet to one that would make a Mum stop nagging! The children designed and labeled their creations beautifully and wrote detailed descriptions as to how they worked. The children were very keen to share their designs and became very excited when discussing them, it really was a lovely lesson.

Thank you so much to all of you who have taken time to practise times tables and number bonds, it has made such a difference. Every day as a class we are practising number bonds, counting in 2s, 5s or 10s and the Year 2s have a daily times table activity to complete first thing in the morning, whilst the Year 1s are practising their number bonds. Please continue to practise these over the holidays.

A huge well done to all the children, parents and grandparents on what has been a unique term for us all. It will surely be one that we will never forget. We are so proud of each and very one of the children for their enthusiasm during this difficult time, whether it has been on Zoom or in the classroom, for such little people they have embraced every challenge full on and remained smiling and positive throughout.

Please take the Easter holidays to have some quality time with your families and for the children to recharge. I look forward to seeing you all in the new Summer term.
