Greys class 4th March

Date: 3rd Mar 2022 @ 5:41pm

Welcome to another new term.

It was lovely to welcome the children back after half term and to hear all of their news.

This week we began our new topic ‘Why were Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong such brave people?’ We began by trying to think of significant individuals that we have already learned about in school and others that we could think of. We talked about why they were significant and the differences they have made and the impact that they had on the world. We found out all about Columbus and then thought of other questions that we would like to know about him and googled those for the answers. On Friday we pretended that we too were explorers on the Santa Maria with Columbus and write messages in a bottle describing how we would have felt on the voyage,

In Maths we finished off our work on length and solved word problems to add and subtract different lengths. Next week we will be moving onto fractions.

We read Mr Wolf’s Pancakes in Literacy and began by writing lists of ingredients that we would need to make pancakes, including those we would need for toppings and used adjectives to describe them and some of us even used alliteration. The Year 2s used commas to separate the items in their lists. Then the following day we wrote our own recipes as to how to make pancakes and included the list of ingredients, method and a picture. We made sure that we used a variety of ‘bossy’ verbs and time conjunctions.

In Computing this term we will be learning all about the International Space Station and this week we used the ipads to help us find out more. We used the following websites to do so, https://esamultimedia.esa.int/multimedia/virtual-tour-iss/ and https://solc.gsfc.nasa.gov/modules/newkz3/index.html. The children are very keen to be able to access these sites at home if it is at all possible.

In Music we had a Superhero theme focussing on pitch and tempo. The children closed their eyes and listened to the ‘Superman March’ by John Williams and imagined their own superheroes. Their ability to talk about the music using musical vocabulary was evident as they later explained how the music’s tempo changed during the piece.
Later they explored how tuned percussion can be used to play a melody.

In PE the children learned a sequence of movement to create a pirate dance. They used their musical skills of counting beats of 8 which helped to keep everyone stay synchronised.

World Book Day was a great success and the children really enjoyed going around the different classrooms in their teams and listening to four very different stories with different activities.

Book reviews next week will be Talia, Olivia and Elle. Templates can be found on school spider in the homework section or please feel free to create your own.

Homework

Maths

Year 1 - I have set you a sumdog challenge and please feel free to practise your number bonds to 20 on https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Year 2 - Please continue to practise your times tables on sumdog, I have updated your books if they were handed in today. You may also practise on https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button or https://www.timestables.co.uk/

Reading

We would like the children to read for at least 10 minutes every day, and those that are doing so are making great progress in their reading and writing. The reading records are checked daily to ensure that the children are reading and that they have been updated accordingly,  which enables us to change the books if needed.

Have a great weekend.
