Highmoor 16th September

Date: 15th Sep 2022 @ 1:08pm

Welcome to another week in Highmoor.

We are continuing to learn about place value in maths, year 3s using numbers to 1000 and yr 4s up to 10,000. We have been using and representing base 10 and place value value counters to help our understanding. We also drew bar and line graphs to show our science experiment results.

In literacy we finished planning and wrote up in best our Magic Box poems. The poems are lovely with lots of imaginative items included and the vocabulary the children used is impressive. We have also worked on river poems and have started to think about the noises a river makes, the path it follows and how we can turn this into a rhyming poem. We also started to read our class book 'The Firework Maker's Daughter' and made some great predictions about what the story could be about based on the cover. We are excited to continue to learn more about Lila's quest to become a firework maker.

In geography we started our topic of rivers. We watched a short video detailing the features of rivers and then wrote our own mini glossary of some of the new words we learnt.

PSHE this half term is all about our different responsibilities and how we look after ourselves to keep ourselves healthy and safe. We thought about how our responsibilities have changed since we were little.

In science we are learning about forces and magnets and had lots of fun investigating friction using force meters, shoes and woolly gloves!

We all explored charcoal this week and used different effects to create river pictures.

Our spellings this week have been looking at how verb endings change depending on the spelling of the root word when adding suffixes. For example, 'like' ends in an e so drop the e and add the suffix ing or ed. 'Chat' has a short vowel sound so double the final consonant and add ing or ed. We have been learning some of our key words whilst doing handwriting.

Homework is to continue to read every day and record it in Home School Diaries, learn the times table detailed in the back of the diary and to do the daily questions on Doodle maths. Please let us know if there are any problems with this. Homework has a massive impact on your children's progress and we thank you in advance for helping your child complete theirs.

Have a great weekend everyone!
