Highmoor 19th May

Date: 19th May 2023 @ 11:55am

Welcome to our week in Highmoor.

Our highlight was the amazing day we had at the Science Centre Oxford! We were given a light show, had time to thoroughly try out lots of different aspects of science in the Exploration Zone and finally went out into the grounds for pond dipping, looking for and classifying the plentiful life both in and on the water. We definitely used all the scientific knowledge and skills which we’ve learned over this academic year too! Thank you to Sally for driving us and helping out.

In literacy we have been focussing on Escape From Pompeii and used the text to draw information out about Tranio's character. We used lots of inference skills and then wrote a character description using complex and compound sentences. We have also been writing up our own fables which we have been working on.

In maths year 4s have been learning about perimeter; looking at rectangles and rectilinear shapes. Year 3 have been measuring using cm, mm and m and converting between the units of measurement.

We leant about Boudicca in history and her rebellion against the Roman invaders. We made comic strips telling the story of her life after watching clips about her.

In PSHE we split into our different year groups. Year 3s focussed on how to keep their bodies healthy learning about things like the right amount of sleep, exercise, diet, screen time and also thought about how our bodies are our own and how to deal with difficult situations if someone is invading our private space. Year 4s have been learning about the basics of human reproduction and the changes that boys and girls go through during puberty.

This afternoon Highmoor became animators! We used an app called FlipaClip (easily downloadable at home!) to create frames for short animations of bouncing balls and experimented with drawings and backgrounds. Next week we will have the amazing opportunity to talk to our virtual visitor, Dara McGarry, a professional animator who worked on ‘Frozen!'

Homework is Doodle maths, reading, times tables and spellings.

Have a great weekend everyone.
