Highmoor week commencing 13th January

Date: 16th Jan 2020 @ 1:11pm

Welcome to another week in Highmoor class

We have had lots of fun in Literacy writing acrostic poems about dragons. We also listened to some dragon poems and then in small groups thought about how we could perform these to our classmates. Although we all acted out the same poem each group's performance was very different. We gave each other feedback on what had been effective about our performances and how they could be improved.

In maths the year 3s have been focussing on addition and subtraction thinking about the best methods to use - partitioning, counting up or down or looking for number bonds or near multiples of 10. Year 4s started the week adding using the column method and then moved on to subtracting by counting up and then solving word problems.

In PSHE we learnt about what democracy means and had some very interesting discussion around this.

This week we practised our recorder playing. We are making really good progress, both at reading music and playing the recorder.

We continued learning about Greece and practised our skills at finding key information from a non fiction text to answer questions. We also started to look at some persuasive writing and learnt about what features make up a piece of persuasive writing.

In science we used decibel meters to measure the effect of soundproofing. We put an ipad playing music in a cardboard box and then insulated the box with a variety of materials. We discovered that the best sound proofing materials were ones full of air. Bubble wrap was best, closely followed by cotton wool. Next week we are going to have a go at making our own musical instruments. Please can you bring in any recycling you have that might be useful - cardboard boxes and tubes, plastic tubs, rubber bands etc. Many thanks in advance!
