Highmoor week commencing 17th May

Date: 20th May 2021 @ 10:12am

Welcome to another week in Highmoor.

We have started to read a new book - Escape from Pompeii - in literacy. We have used retrieval and inference skills to describe the main character's personality, identified prepositions and written sentences using them to describe settings and looked for powerful verbs and adjectives to describe a scene from the book.

We finally got to use our Roman shields after waiting weeks for a break in the weather! We had lots of fun in the playground pretending to be Roman soldiers and Celts. The Celts were armed with foam balls while the Romans got themselves into various formations like the Tortoise and Wedge to protect themselves while they attacked the Celts! It was lots of fun and we could see how the Roman army was so organised and effective.

In maths year 4 finished the topic of time by converting between analogue and digital and 12 and 24 hour clocks. Year 3 finished their fractions topic by ordering and comparing them. We all ended the week by consolidating division using place value counters.

Science involved investigating the human digestive system. We labelled a diagram of the digestive system and the quizzed each other to see if we could remember the function of each of the parts. We also looked at the results of last week's experiment on the effect of sugar and acid on egg shells to help us envisage what they do to our teeth. We could see that the sugar had discoloured the egg shell and the acid had completely dissolved it leaving the membrane behind. We all tried to have a feel of the squishy egg in the membrane but it only made it half way round the class before it burst! It had also increased in size as the membrane was permeable so let some of the vinegar through.

In music we played motifs on glockenspiels and then composed our own.

Homework is times tables on Sumdog, spellings which can be found in the children's green book, on the school website and on Edshed and reading every day.

Have a great weekend!
