Highmoor week commencing 2nd December

Date: 6th Dec 2019 @ 11:14am

Welcome to another week in Highmoor!

Maths has been tricky this week with year 3 and 4 both learning some new concepts. The year 3s learned about remainders when we divide a number by something that does not go into it exactly. We have been looking at halves, quarters and thirds. We found halves, quarters and thirds of numbers. We also halved odd numbers. Year 4s were using the chunking method to divide 2 digit numbers by a single digit. This new method was difficult at first as it involves lots of elements but by the end of the week we had cracked it! On Friday we made and decorated nets of 3D shapes to decorate our Christmas tree. We all had great fun doing this and our classroom is feeling very Christmassy now!

In Literacy we have started to write a non chronological report about Prehistoric Britain demonstrating all we have learnt in this topic over the term. We also continued reading Iron Man and investigated the language used for effect.

In music we have been practising We Wish You A Merry Christmas. We can't wait to share it with you at the Christingle service.

This week it was the turn of the Year 3s to have a go at their ceramic skills. A lot of this work involves a light touch as the wet clay can be so fiddly and unpredictable. In joining the flat slabs to form a cylinder everything becomes very  delicate so we had to work with a lot of care and concentration. Pinching the base to the main body was a challenge but Mrs Clinkard has been very impressed with all of the children’s commitment to producing their best work and tackling some very tricky techniques. Next week we will be decorating our work.

Homework this week is to choose a few pages from a fiction book and identify the language features within. You could log on to activelearn and use some of The Iron Man that is on there if you wanted or choose a book of your own.

Have a great weekend.
