Highmoor week commencing 6th September

Date: 10th Sep 2021 @ 3:20pm

Welcome back to school everyone!

The children have settled back into school life brilliantly. The year 4s have stepped up and are showing the year 3s how things work in the classroom and the year 3s are adjusting well to being a bit more independent and expectations of behaviour etc.

Thank you to those of you that attended the zoom meeting this week. For those of you that missed it the powerpoint is on the school website under Highmoor Class page.

In maths this week we have been looking at place value. We have used base 10 and place value counters and have been partitioning 3 and 4 digit numbers. Year 3s have been working with 3 digit numbers and year 4s with 4 digit numbers.

Our topic this half term is 'Who first lived in Britain?' looking at how life changed from the Stone Age, through the Bronze Age until the end of the Iron Age. We had great fun investigating a cave in our classroom which had cave paintings inside, looking at artefacts and thinking about what they were used for and what they can tell us about life in prehistoric Britain.

To tie in with this in literacy we have been reading a book called 'The First Drawing' all about a boy who has a great imagination and sees animals everywhere - in the clouds, in stones he collects and in the firelight. We have been writing diary entries, looking at powerful verbs, writing expanded noun phrases including adjectives and similes and finished with a piece of descriptive writing.

We used charcoal in art to recreate parts of our favourite cave paintings. Apologies for dirty clothes!

Homework

Please ensure your child reads at home every day with an adult. Children have been sent home with a Home School Diary. They have been told to write the title of the book every time they start a new one. They then need to write the date and the page they have read up to. A times tables challenge on Sumdog is set to start on Monday next week and will finish Sunday evening. Log in details are in the front of the Home School Diaries. Times tables will be tested in class on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Sable and Rosamund are this weeks book reviewers. Every week 2 children will review a book they have read and present it to class on Tuesdays. A paper copy of the review template they need to complete will be sent home and can also be found in the pupil area of the school website under their homework items.

Please feel free to come into the classroom between 8.30 and 8.55 if you want to speak to me about anything or catch me at pick up time.

Have a great weekend everyone.
