Welcome back to our blog.
In phonics we ended our week with a game to revise words which included the phonics we have been learning. Children were given a clipboard with two lists; a list with their friend's names on it and a list of phonic words.
On each of their heads they wore a 'crown' with a word written on it from the list. They had to cross out and write the word on the list worn by their friends until the last remaining word, which they then claimed as their own.
They went about this really, really confidently and in good spirit. Definitely a game to be played again.
The year 2's are learning about spelling rules when applying suffixes to words eg hike - hiking, nice - nicest.
In Maths we have been working with the Year 1's on thier number concept of numbers from 10 - 20.
In Year 2 we completed symmetry and began learning about money and the value of coins and notes. We are to begin doing calculations this coming week.
In English we had great fun watching mixed groups of four performing the poem we've been exploring about toys. The children have been working on their own poems by using interesting adjectives to describe their own toys. This will be completed in the next few days before we take on the section on 'Intructional Writing' . We shall be looking at the instructions for how to make a sock puppet and exploring the kind of language used, comparing it to the kind of language used in the poem they've just learned.
They will be making their own sock puppet in a week's time. You should all receive an email from Mrs Hilton, regarding what your child needs for this task.
In Computers we continued to use Bee-Bots , but this time we used them virtually and the children had to programme their Bee-Bots to follow a 'virtual race track' and to spell their names on an alphabet grid.
It all looked much easier than it really is. The photo's attached show their incredible concentration when copying the algorithm solutions on their iPads.
In Art we discussed Abtract art and the children watch a short clip explaining the difference between realistic and abstract art. The class then followed some simple instructions to create their own abstract pictures modelled on the art of Kandinsky. They found this very liberating and some comments: 'You can't do anything wrong!' and 'It makes me feel free.'
In Science we monitored the growth of our Cress seeds and the the Daffodil bulbs. They learned about the structure of seeds and learned how they grow.
In History we watched a clip about toys from the past and what they were made of. The children talked about the toys their parents and grandparents played with and they sorted pictures and labels into a Venn diagram.
We are learning about the Rights of Children in PSHE and this has elicited much discussion. I was impressed by their thoughtfulness, compassion and awareness.
With the celebration of Burns night this week, I had our wonderful Scots volunteer, Jenny Dunne, explain to the children who Robbie Burns was and how he is celebrated annually. We showed them a clip of the 'Ode to the Haggis' which was very amusing. The year 2 children then read and answered comprehension questions about Robert Burns.
In PE the children had great fun on the common using their footwork to guide their footballs, despite the icy breeze.
Have a great week.
