Courageous Advocacy
At Peppard Church of England Primary School, courageous advocacy is not an addition to school life; it is central to who we are, what we believe and how we live out our Christian vision each day.
Our vision, "Encourage one another and build each other up" (1 Thessalonians 5:11), inspires us to create a caring and supportive community where every individual is valued, nurtured and encouraged to flourish. Through our Christian ethos, we seek to develop children who are confident, compassionate and equipped to make a positive difference in the world around them.
We believe that every child can be a force for good, using their voice, actions and talents to support others and bring about positive change. A courageous advocate is someone who stands up for what is right, challenges injustice and seeks to improve the lives of others. They demonstrate compassion, empathy and a willingness to act when they see a need.
The Bible reminds us:
"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are vulnerable." (Proverbs 31:8)
The Church of England reminds us that courageous advocacy involves putting the needs of others first, offering our skills, talents and actions in the face of challenge or adversity. We teach our children that even small acts of kindness and service can have a profound impact on the lives of others and help create positive change.
We recognise that everyone faces challenges at different points in their lives and may need support to overcome barriers. We also understand that there are attitudes, systems and situations that sometimes need to change. Our pupils learn that it is important to help others whenever we can, regardless of who they are, where they come from or the challenges they face.
Our values of Kindness, Perseverance and Respect underpin our approach to courageous advocacy.
Kindness
We encourage our children to care deeply for others and respond with compassion when they see a need. Through acts of service, fundraising, community engagement and everyday interactions, pupils learn that kindness has the power to strengthen communities and improve lives.
Perseverance
Creating positive change is not always easy or immediate. We teach children to persevere when faced with challenges, to continue striving for what is right and to understand that making a difference often requires resilience, determination and courage.
Respect
We believe that every person is uniquely valued by God. Children learn to respect different viewpoints, cultures, beliefs and experiences, developing an understanding of fairness, equality and human dignity. Through respectful dialogue and thoughtful action, they learn how to become advocates for themselves and others.
Through our curriculum, collective worship and wider school experiences, we help children develop an understanding of what it means to belong to both a local and global community. With this understanding comes a sense of responsibility to care for others, protect God's world and contribute positively to society.
Together, we consider our local environment, our village community and the wider world. Children learn that their actions matter and that they can have a positive impact on the wellbeing of others. Our curriculum and school community actively embrace a responsibility to care for the world in which we live and the people who share it with us.
Being a courageous advocate means:
Standing up for truth, fairness and justice.
Acting with compassion and kindness, even when it may be difficult.
Speaking up for those whose voices may not be heard.
Recognising injustice and taking responsible action.
Using our gifts and talents to serve others.
Taking responsibility for making a positive difference in our communities and the wider world.
As a Church of England school, we believe that every person is created in the image of God and deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness and respect. Inspired by our vision of encouraging and building one another up, we teach our children to use their voices and actions to support others, both within our school community and beyond.
At Peppard, courageous advocacy is embedded within school life through pupil leadership opportunities, charitable fundraising, community partnerships, environmental projects, collective worship and curriculum learning. These experiences help children develop empathy, compassion and a desire to serve others.
We do not engage in projects simply to 'tick a box'. Instead, we seek to develop a lasting culture of service, responsibility and action. Through this work, our children become active citizens who understand their ability to influence positive change and who live out our vision of encouraging one another and building each other up.
Through Kindness, Perseverance and Respect, we are nurturing courageous advocates who have the confidence, compassion and determination to make a positive difference in their communities and beyond.
