Assessment Statement

At Peppard Church of England Primary School we believe that assessment is fundamental in enabling teachers to extend and challenge our children’s learning, supporting them in reaching their full potential. Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning and is embedded within our daily classroom practice.

Teachers assess pupils in a variety of ways to ensure they have an accurate understanding of each child’s progress and next steps in learning. Assessment takes place through:

  • questioning and discussion during lessons

  • careful review of pupils’ work in books

  • observations of learning and classroom activities

  • high quality written and verbal feedback

  • reading assessments and quizzes

  • more formal assessments and progress tests

  • statutory assessments such as the Phonics Screening Check and Key Stage SATs.

Assessment information enables teachers to identify strengths and areas for development and to adapt teaching to meet the needs of all pupils. Where children require additional support, targeted supports are put in place to help them make progress.

Assessment data is used across the school to support high quality teaching and learning. Teachers and senior leaders review pupil progress regularly to ensure that all children, including specific groups such as disadvantaged pupils, are making good progress. Senior leaders monitor assessment through activities such as book scrutiny, lesson visits and pupil progress meetings.

Governors are provided with regular updates on the achievement and progress of pupils across the school.

Parents are kept informed about their child’s progress through parents’ evenings and written annual reports. Where there are concerns about a child’s progress, parents will be contacted so that school and home can work together to provide appropriate support.

Our assessment system supports the ongoing development of our curriculum and helps ensure that all pupils are given the opportunity to succeed and achieve their best.
