British Values
At Peppard Church of England Primary School, we actively promote the fundamental British Values of:
Democracy
The Rule of Law
Individual Liberty
Mutual Respect
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
These values are fully consistent with our Christian vision:
“Encourage one another and build each other up.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11
They are also reflected in our school values of Kindness, Respect and Perseverance.
British Values are not taught as isolated ideas. They are embedded throughout our curriculum, Collective Worship, Religious Education, relationships, behaviour expectations, enrichment opportunities and the wider life of the school. Through these experiences, pupils learn how to participate responsibly in their community, respect the rights of others and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
Democracy
We help pupils understand that democracy means having a voice, listening to others and taking part in fair decision-making.
Pupils are given regular opportunities to express their views and contribute to school life through:
School Council and pupil leadership roles;
pupil questionnaires and pupil voice activities;
class discussions and debates;
Collective Worship leadership;
voting for representatives and responsibilities;
contributing to school improvement and curriculum evaluation; and
opportunities to make choices within their learning.
Children learn that their opinions matter, while also understanding that decisions must consider the views, needs and wellbeing of the wider community.
The Rule of Law
Pupils are taught why laws, rules and expectations are necessary to protect people, promote fairness and help communities live and work together safely.
Our school expectations are clear, consistent and rooted in Kindness, Respect and Perseverance. Children learn:
the reasons behind school rules;
that actions have consequences;
the difference between right and wrong;
how laws protect individual rights and safety;
the importance of fairness, responsibility and accountability; and
how to resolve disagreements respectfully.
Through PSHE, Collective Worship, Online Safety, safeguarding education and visits from community representatives, pupils develop an age-appropriate understanding of laws and their responsibilities within society.
Individual Liberty
At Peppard, pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, independence and self-awareness within a safe and supportive environment.
Children are taught that individual liberty includes the freedom to make choices, express opinions and develop personal beliefs, while respecting the rights and freedoms of others.
Pupils are supported to:
make informed and responsible choices;
understand their rights and responsibilities;
express their views respectfully;
develop their individual talents and interests;
recognise and communicate their needs;
assess risk and make safe decisions;
understand personal boundaries and consent; and
seek help from trusted adults when needed.
Our curriculum helps pupils understand how to exercise freedom responsibly, both in school and online.
Mutual Respect
Mutual respect is central to our Christian vision and daily life.
We teach children that every person has dignity and value and should be treated with kindness and respect. Strong relationships between pupils, staff, families, governors, All Saints Church and the wider village community help create a culture where everyone feels known, valued and included.
Pupils learn to:
listen carefully to different opinions;
disagree respectfully;
recognise and challenge prejudice;
show empathy and compassion;
celebrate the achievements of others;
work cooperatively;
respect personal space and boundaries; and
understand how their words and actions affect others.
Respect is modelled by adults and reinforced consistently through our curriculum, behaviour approach, Collective Worship and everyday interactions.
Tolerance of those with different Faiths and Beliefs
We understand tolerance as more than simply accepting difference. We want pupils to develop genuine knowledge, understanding and respect for people whose faith, beliefs, culture or way of life may differ from their own.
Through Religious Education, Collective Worship, PSHE and the wider curriculum, pupils learn about Christianity, other principal religions and a range of religious and non-religious worldviews.
Opportunities include:
visits to places of worship;
engagement with members of different faith communities;
exploration of religious festivals, practices and traditions;
discussion of identity, belonging and belief;
the use of inclusive books and curriculum resources;
learning about diverse families, cultures and communities; and
challenging stereotypes and misconceptions.
As a small rural school, we deliberately broaden pupils’ experiences beyond those they may encounter in their immediate community so that they are well prepared for life in diverse modern Britain.
British Values across Our Curriculum
British Values are promoted through all areas of learning.
They are particularly evident within:
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education;
Relationships and Health Education;
Religious Education;
Collective Worship;
History and Geography;
English and high-quality literature;
Online Safety;
safeguarding education;
enrichment and pupil leadership;
sport and teamwork;
charitable and community projects; and
opportunities for courageous advocacy.
Pupils learn about Parliament, democracy, justice, equality, human rights, diversity and the contribution of individuals and communities to British society.
Preventing Discrimination and Extremism
We are committed to safeguarding pupils from prejudice, discrimination, radicalisation and extremism.
Staff help pupils develop the knowledge and confidence to:
recognise unfairness and prejudice;
challenge stereotypes appropriately;
think critically about information;
recognise misinformation and manipulation;
stay safe online;
understand that harmful or extremist views should not go unchallenged; and
seek support when something makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
Any discriminatory language or behaviour is addressed promptly and sensitively in accordance with the school’s Behaviour, Equality and Safeguarding Policies.
Our intended Outcome
Through the active promotion of British Values, we aim for pupils to leave Peppard Church of England Primary School as confident, respectful and responsible young people who:
value democracy and participate positively;
understand the importance of laws and responsibilities;
exercise their freedoms safely and responsibly;
respect the dignity and rights of others;
appreciate diversity;
challenge prejudice and discrimination; and
contribute positively to their communities and wider society.
Rooted in our Christian vision, we encourage pupils to build one another up and to become compassionate, informed and active citizens who are prepared to flourish in modern Britain.
British Values at Peppard are not delivered through one subject alone. They are promoted through the Religious Education curriculum, Collective Worship, PSHE, Relationships Education, safeguarding education and the wider life of the school. Together these policies ensure that pupils develop as compassionate, respectful and active citizens who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.
